Meet the Instructors
 
 

joanieJoanie Farley Gillispie is currently an instructor at Berkeley City College and the University of California at Berkeley Extension. She holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Clinical Psychology from Fielding Graduate University, Santa Barbara, CA, and a B.S. in Education from Wheelock College, Boston, MA.

Dr. Joanie is author of the book Cyber Rules: What You Really Need To Know About the Internet, A Guide for Clinicians, Educators, and Parents, co-written with Jayne Gackenbach, Ph.D., and is a contributing author to the book Psychology and the Internet: Intrapersonal, Interpersonel, and Transpersonal Implications by Jayne Gackenbach. Dr. Joanie is a Telly Award winner and has worked with health promotion and educational programs funded by the California State Department of Education; the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as Director of the Healthy Kids Program; and as Principal Investigator for the Sierra Foothill AIDS Foundation.

Dr. Joanie has served as past-president of the Marin Psychological Association, has worked in private practice as a clinical psychologist for the City and County of San Francisco, the Family Service Agency of Marin, and with the San Francisco and Marin County Juvenile Justice Departments. She also holds a Postdoctoral Professional Certificate in Neuropsychological Assessment Screening from U.C. Berkeley, is a Certified National Trainer for the APA HIV Office of Prevention and Education (HOPE), a Red Cross Certified National Disaster Response Team member, and now works to develop both online and offline interactive multimedia courses in the areas of Psychology, Multimedia Arts, and Education.

Dr. Gillispie presents regularly at professional conferences and to community organizations about the offline effects of our online lives. Her media presentations include Cosmopolitan Magazine, the 1st World Congress of Sexual Health in Sydney Australia, “Shrink Wrap Radio”, Psychjourney podcasts, and The Jordan Rich Show on WBZ Radio in Boston.

john-howarth1John Howarth is Associate Director of SEPUP, the Science Education for Public Understanding Program at the Lawrence Hall of Science, University of California at Berkeley.

John has a B.S. in Biochemistry and a Postgraduate Certificate in Education, both from the University of Liverpool in England. He also has an M.A. in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University.

Before coming to the United States, John was a secondary science teacher for 11 years in Malaysia, Singapore, and Brunei. In the U.S. he spent 10 years teaching in Jackson Hole, Wyoming before moving to Michigan in 1996 where he worked as a science teacher, a science curriculum supervisor, and as Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction. During his time as a teacher in Wyoming he received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Mathematics Teaching from President Clinton and was also Technology and Learning Magazine Teacher of the Year for the Pacific Northwest and Rocky Mountain region.

Maxine Einhorn currently supervises the Media Literacy Project at KQED’s Education Network. She is a Media Literacy Project Supervisor and Curriculum Developer, a credentialed teacher, and has worked as a tenured instructor and department manager in colleges in London, UK, for over twenty years. Ms. Einhorn has a B.A. in History from the University of Sussex and an M.A. in Film and TV for Education from University of London. She has taught film studies, communications, and media literacy, and has worked as a researcher on independent film productions in London and San Francisco.
