Meeting Agendas and Minutes for Rethink: Justice

BCC Friends and Family!

You’re invited to our next Rethink Justice meeting:
Thursday, March 23rd, during College Hour in the Teaching and Learning Center (Rm. 341).

*Help us plan for the end of term events*
During the week of May 8th, over several days, we will feature student presentations and work related to social justice issues, as well as student-centered discussion circles and workshops. If you have any ideas around what you’d like to see featured, including from groups you are involved in or know about, come through so we can include it in the plans!

*Share ideas for events and projects on social justice*
We are including listings on our website (https://www.berkeleycitycollege.edu/rethink-justice/) and/or via email. Let us know if you have events or projects you want listed. Be sure to include “RTJ” in the subject so your email doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.

Here is just one of many upcoming happenings:
Voices from a Peoples History

We have the first meeting scheduled for putting together a readers theater performance of Voices from Peoples History of the United States by Howard Zinn.  We’ll be meeting during the college hour in room 31 on Wednesday, March 31, 2017.  We  are lucky to have a fabulous student director, Fallon Burner, who is extremely experienced taking the helm for the project.

Please come and invite your students to participate! At this point we have 10 parts we need to cast.

And here are some of the ways faculty are engaging the theme of Rethink Justice in their classes:
*incorporating social justice projects into your classes
*having students present their social justice related projects at a campus event
*giving extra credit for students who attend a campus event related to the theme
*giving extra credit assignments that allow students to incorporate social justice angles into courses that are not ostensibly about social justice issuesAgenda and Minutes from Rethink: Justice, November 28th

Fishbowl Explanation and Planning from Shawn
Purpose of Fishbowl: create a space to talk about social justice issues and listen to others with diverse opinions. Space and experience with dialogue.

  • Two Circles: inner circle speaks, outer circle listens, ideally with two facilitators. There can be switching out of people between two circles.

They keep “Stack”, and stimulate dialogue when convo lulls, Welcome. 2nd Facilitator helps set up the circles, helps transitions of people between circles. Timing guidelines are very key to keep speakers strictly to times set: maximum 1 minute per comment. A go-around could also be a way to get things started, when each person speaks.

Vivian wants to make sure we have 2 facilitators per group. Asks if there are people with familiar with the topics to participate. Thinks the week before finals is going to have low attendance. Students are planning a teach-in for next semester on racial justice with no classes that day.

Shawn: We’ll just have to stay with the “failing forward” model, even if we will have low attendance.

Jenny: Recognize where we are as a community now, and that racial and immigration justice/rights is what is of most concern right now. On hot issues, it might be best to have an “expert”.

John: Concerned with the appropriateness of people who have had no experience with the issue they are facilitating.

Facilitators: Tuesday and Wednesday: Jennifer Ajinga, Vivian Allen(7th), Shawn McDougal and Chris Lebo Planas (both 6th and 7th), John Saenz (7th), Lisa (7th)

We’ll be doing two topics each day, and possibly add a third topic for the 2nd day.

Tuesday: Racial Justice and Treatment of Immigrants

Wednesday: Education Justice & Income and Wealth Inequalities
