BCC Landed Partnership

Berkeley City College Becomes First College in East Bay to Launch Landed;
Program Already Helping Bay Area K-12 School Employees Buy Homes

Berkeley, CA – Today, Berkeley City College (BCC) announced it has become the first institution of higher education in the East Bay to launch with Landed, a down payment assistance and homebuyer education program aimed at helping educators and school employees afford to buy homes.

The program provides half of the down payment on a home, up to $120,000 per family, in exchange for a portion of the change in the value of the home when the home is sold. Any gains from this assistance are re-invested to support an ever-growing number of educators and essential professionals. Landed’s down payment support will be available to all faculty, staff, and administrators who have worked for Berkeley City College, or another qualifying educational institution, for at least two years.

“As the cost of housing in the Bay Area continues to rise, too many of our employees are finding it harder to afford homes and stay in the area,” said Berkeley City College President Rowena Tomaneng. “We believe Landed will be a valuable solution to help improve our recruitment and retention by making homeownership more accessible, and we’re encouraged by the success that the program is already having for K-12 schools across Alameda County.”

Since its founding in 2015, Landed has helped more than 200 educators purchase homes in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, Denver, and Seattle, including more than 20 educators in Alameda County. The partnership with Berkeley City College is Landed’s first with a higher education institution in the East Bay.

“We are thrilled to partner with Berkeley City College to support faculty and staff. Our early success in partnering with community colleges has been encouraging and we know that the housing need is only growing,” said Landed Director of Partnerships, Ian Magruder.

Interested employees can apply for Landed support beginning Tuesday, September 3, at
landed.com/signup.

This is a conference for progressive community advocates and organizers presented by a coalition of organizations and civic engagement groups, with partners in local unions, GOTV alliances, and grassroots activists. Our focus: strategies and tactics to hold the House, take back the Senate and White House, and nourish a culture of active citizenry that heals and sustains our democracy over time.

In person voting will take place at Berkeley City College’s Welcome Center on both election days from 11 am – 6 pm.

* Black History Month has been on fire! The Muslim Student Association (MSA) hosted a power talk, which featured the Black Muslim Legacy and movie nights in partnership with Ignite to Civic Engagement Club. The Black Student Union hosted several events that showcased the history of Black art, fashion, and music.

* Lunar New Year was celebrated at BCC on February 12th. Students was taken on a “walk around the world” where they were able to visit different countries to experience how various cultures celebrate the New Year. Student who completed their global passports were able to enjoy a fitting Lunar New Year lunch.

ASBCC Student Govern Elections Now Open!

Be a member of our student government, the Associated Student of Berkeley City College (ASBCC), for the 2019-2020 academic year! Elections are now open. Application and petition package are due on Tuesday, February 26th. There will be candidate orientations on Monday, March 11th from 11am to 12noon and Thursday, from 12noon to 1pm in Room 057. Voting will be on Tuesday, April 16 and Wednesday, April 17th.

Women’s History Month: Feminine Hygiene Product Drive

In celebration of Women’s History Month, the Women’s Leadership Club will be holding a Feminine Hygiene Product Drive. Donations will go to Youth Engagement Advocacy Housing (YEAH!), which is an emergency shelter program for youth in Berkeley. Collection bin will be location in front of the BCC Welcome Center. The Women’s Leadership Club will also be hosting the following events:

* Wednesday, March 6th 12:15pm International Women’s Fashion Show in the BCC Atrium.

* Wednesday, March 13th 6:00pm Screening of “It’s a Girl Documentary” in the BCC Auditorium.

* Wednesday, March 20th 12:15pm Linkedin Workshop: The Power of Online Resume in the BCC Career and Transfer Center.

Berkeley, California, December 3, 2018 – The Berkeley Community Fund  has received a two-year grant of $250,000 from the Bayer USA Foundation, funds that will be used to support the Berkeley Promise scholarship program launched last year. The donation will support scholarships, mentoring, and STEM career exploration for Berkeley Unified School District graduates from lower-income families and underrepresented groups attending Berkeley City College .

 

In addition to one year of free community college through the California Promise program, Berkeley Promise scholars receive $1,500 while they are at Berkeley City College and the opportunity to apply for $8,000/year once they transfer to a 4-year school. Berkeley Promise scholars are placed in a First Year Experience learning community at Berkeley City College; they can also participate in summer transition-to-college workshops; and receive mentoring, guidance, and transfer support.

 

“We are thrilled with Bayer’s commitment to the Berkeley Promise,” said BCF Executive Director, Joleen Ruffin. “Higher education is essential to helping young people in our community reach their goals. This gift helps us remove many of the barriers to success for our students from lower-income families and underrepresented in higher education.  Through the Berkeley Promise we will increase bachelor’s degree attainment rates for students who start at Berkeley City College while building awareness of STEM academic pathways and career opportunities.”

 

“In everything we do, we leverage science for a better life and as such we are passionate about scientific discovery and learning,” said Judy Chou, Ph.D., Senior Vice President and Head of the Bayer site in Berkeley. “So, we are particularly proud of the ways that this gift will expose Berkeley young people to the opportunities in STEM education and scientific careers. We look forward to watching these students become tomorrow’s leaders.”

 

The 2018 Berkeley Promise Scholars will be recognized at an awards ceremony on Friday, December 7th from 4:30 to 7:00 PM in the Berkeley City College auditorium. The event is open to the public.
