Feburary 8, 2018 – Arab Film Series Screening: Mahbas (Solitaire) – Egypt, Jordan Lebanon

Solitaire (Mahbas) was the opening night film at The Castro from the most recent AFF film festival. The personal prejudices spewing from the Middle East’s political turmoils form the backdrop of SOLITAIRE, a tragicomic tale of the engagement-gone-wrong between a young Lebanese woman and her Syrian suitor.

The free Arab Film Series is back at Berkeley City College through the summer! The series has returned, fully funded via a mini-grant from the Innovation Fund, thanks to a fruitful collaboration between Berkeley City College President, Dr. Rowena Tomaneng and Professor Dr. Gaye Walton-Price, The Arab Film Festival(AFF) and Yalla Arabi.

The screenings benefit Dr. Price’s Arabic language students at BCC and the community at large seeking to engage with creative voices responding to current events related to the Middle East and the Arab-American experience, as well as anyone who is interested broadly in Arab culture or language. Previous screenings have included both a filmmaker and film director that engaged with students and attendees in a lively and educational post-film Q & A.

The sub-titled film series includes contemporary award-winning films and is in collaboration with the renown Arab Film festival, the longest running independent Arab film festival in North America, and Yalla Arabi, an Arabic language and cultural meetup group founded in 2008 by Peralta District employee, Faiza Ali, who dreamt up the idea for the BCC film series.

EVERYONE is welcome to these #FREE upcoming screenings in the Berkeley City College auditorium. They all begin promptly at 6:30pm:

Ara Jo

Ara Jo Zine Library Dedication and Memorial – Nov. 29 @ College Hour, Atrium

Event: Ara Jo zine library dedication and memorial for those lost in the GhostShip fire

Time/Location: Wednesday, November 29th 12:15-1:30 pm, Atrium

Ara Jo, who passed in the GhostShip fire one year ago, was a driving force in the East Bay zine* scene and in bringing zines to Berkeley City College.  She not only helped to coordinate several years of the annual East Bay Alternative Book and Zine Fest, which was held at BCC from 2010-2015, but also acted as resident zinester on campus.  Ara Jo brought zines into classrooms and taught students skills related to self-publication.

Berkeley City College library is dedicating the zine collection to Ara Jo to recognize her contributions to campus and community in a ceremony on Wednesday, November 29th in the atrium during college hour (12:15 – 1:30).

Please join librarians, zinesters who have collaborated with Ara, and Ara’s friends to celebrate her life and legacy.  If you like, you can bring supplies for an altar to all victims of the GhostShip fire.  Following the dedication, the altar will be placed in Berkeley City College library.

Zine donations will also be accepted.

Learn more about Ara Jo’s life and influence.

*What is a zine?  It’s a self-published, small run publication that can cover basically any topic – from the deeply personally to the proselytizing political to DIY and more.  BCC’s zine collection is organized to fit with topics covered in BCC courses.

Orchids in bloom

Health Fair @ BCC on Nov. 9 from 11 am to 1:30 pm

This service learning project for students by students is the highlight of the semester. It is hosted by BCC’s Health Education Students.

Join us in the BCC Atrium on Thursday, November 9, 2017, from 111:00 am to 1:30 pm!

As we have done for the last 10+ years, each semester our students work hard to design, plan, research and present a Health Fair to the entire college community.  Every aspect of the planning is done by the students, including selecting topics, researching them, creating vibrant display boards and important handouts for participants, out-reaching to community agencies and resources, and inviting vendors to table.

Visit BCC’s Social Work and Human Services website for more information on the Social Work and Human Services Paraprofessional Certificate Program.

Also be sure to visit the BCC Wellness website for services available to students.
