Youth Apprenticeship ~ Careers with Children and Families

This innovative integrated education and on-the-job training pathway program is designed to appeal to youth interested in professions working with children and families serving as an onramp to a variety of careers—as teachers of young children, teacher aides, home visitors,  family advocates, child and adolescent early interventionist, recreation worker, and more.

Successful Program Completion:

  • 12 semester units of IGETC transferable college credits while in high school
  • School Readiness Certificate of Proficiency that stacks to an AA degree and/or transfer to UC, CSU or a private college or university
  • Child Development Associate Teacher Permit with a School-Age emphasis issued by the CA Commission on Teacher Credentialing
  • Registered Apprentice, eligible to be hired as a teacher’s aide after high school graduation and receive integrated supports to complete degree and transfer goals

 Year 1  CHDEV 51 Child Growth and Development (3)
 SOC 13 Sociology of the Family (3)
 Summer Job Placement EDUC 464 Occupational Work Experience in Education (1-4), and 6-8 weeks of on-the-job training / up to 320 OJT hours
Year 2  English 47 – Children’s Literature (3)
 EDUC 1 Introduction to Education (3)
 Summer Job Placement EDUC 464 Occupational Work Experience in Education (1-4), and 6-8 weeks of on-the-job training / up to 320 OJT hours
 Berkeley City College Fall Admissions  16 week semester ~ Enroll full time (12-15 units)
