Analysis of history and aesthetics of film from its inception in the late nineteenth century to the present: Language of film, factual films vs. fictional films, effect of films on contemporary society.  1001.00

This course takes a critical approach to film history; it examines various styles, genres, and movements (from the late-nineteenth century to New Hollywood). Students will study films from diverse times and places, and should come away from the class with a broad understanding of how to analyze or “read” a film according to the technical language of film studies. Students will also be exposed to a variety of films of historical and international importance, and learn the fundamentals of film theory. All required reading will be available for free to students.

This course section uses only zero-cost course materials. Course materials are provided digitally free of charge. Printed materials are sometimes available for purchase.
