Custom Menu

Custom Menus allow you to group links together and add them to the left or right sidebar. You create the menu first and order the links in the way you want, then add the Custom Menu as a widget (using Appearance > Widgets). The links can be other Pages, external URLs, files, and Posts.

Below is an example. The default Navigation heading has only the home page listed under it, and there are 3 Custom Menus. The first menu beginning with “ASBCC” is actually a Custom Menu with no title so it simulates a list under Navigation. The “Forms” block is a Custom Menu, and the “Student Ambassador Program:” block is another Custom Menu.  Our theme automatically adds Pages under Navigation when they are published. To avoid listing the Pages twice (i.e. under Navigation and in a Custom Menu), uncheck the Exclude box while you are in Edit mode for the Page.

The Custom Menu is added as widget to the left or right sidebar area. Before adding the “Custom Menu” widget to the sidebar, you need to create it. The image below shows 3 custom menus that have been added to the Left sidebar.

To create a Custom Menu, go to Appearance > Menus. Then create a new menu and give it a short descriptive name. Then create a menu item by add existing Pages (check the box for a Page) or expand Custom Links and enter a URL and name for the link, and click the “Add to Menu” button. This will place an item on the right side under Menu Structure. You can then drag the rectangular block up or down in the order you want, or indented. Last click the “Save Menu” button.

Last, go back to Appearance > Widgets. Click a new Custom Menu widget item on the left side and drag it to the Left or Right or Footer block on the right:

When you expand the new Custom Widget, give it a title that will appear on the web page, and select the menu you just created. Then SAVE!
