Conversations about men & manhood – Saturday May 4 | 9-1pm | BCC Auditorium

We invite you to join in on conversations about images of men in our society, the challenges of being a man in the US and discussions about violence, stereotypes, leadership and the path to developing oneself into a joyful, inclusive and productive man. The conversations will also include discussions about the image of manhood in poetry, mythology and pre-modern societies. There will be a potluck lunch at noon. Please feel free to bring something to share. This is an event about the topic of men but it is not just for men. It is an inclusive event and everyone is welcome.


Tom Gambell, Sensei, is the Founder and Chief Instructor of East Bay Aikido in Oakland, CA. He has been teaching aikido for over 30 years. His classes emphasize bringing the metaphors of a martial practice into our daily lives as a source of strength and guidance. He is a 6th Degree Black Belt and a veteran of the Vietnam era. He often offers talks at men’s conferences, such as the Minnesota Men’s Conference, established in 1984 by Robert Bly.

Dr. K. Noel Amherd has a M.A. in Anthropology and a Ph.D. in African Studies from the Centre of West African Studies, University of Birmingham, UK. He is an initiated Ifa Diviner (Babalawo) of the Yoruba in Nigeria, West Africa.

Dr. Fabián Banga is a professor and the Chair of the Modern Languages Department at Berkeley City College in Berkeley, CA, where he teaches Spanish composition, culture and literature. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in Hispanic Languages & Literature from the University of California, Berkeley.
