Yasuteru Yamada Talks About the Damage and Containment Efforts of Nuclear Reactors Following the 2011 Earthquake and Tsunami in Japan – at BCC on Oct. 17th, 12:15 PM

15 October 2012

The Global Studies Club presents this special event on Wednesday, 10/17 at 12:15 Pm in the BCC auditorium.

Yastel Yamada is the co- founder of the SVCF (Skilled Veterans Corps for Fukushima), composed of retired nuclear workers, engineers, construction workers and others volunteering to work in the high-radiation environment of Fukushima Daiichi to stabilize and decommission the plant, so younger workers don’t have to be exposed to radiation.

Please come and hear his report of what he did and is doing today to prevent more Fukushimas. See the fully flyer by clicking on the image below.

He’s taken on the Japanese government, TEPCO, and the Nuclear Village. Now Yasuteru Yamada is coming to America. The huge earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan on March 11,  2011, damaged three of the nuclear reactors at Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, causing nuclear melt-downs continuing to this day, threatening the people and environment not only of Japan but everywhere.

To date, containment efforts have been ineffective and far too slow. Yastel Yamada is the cofounder of the SVCF (Skilled Veterans Corps for Fukushima), composed of retired nuclear workers, engineers, construction workers and others volunteering to work in the high-radiation environment of Fukushima Daiichi to stabilize and decommission the plant, so younger workers don’t have to be exposed to radiation.

Mr. Yamada, the President, says, “I am 73 and on average I probably have 13 to 15 years left to live. Even if I were exposed to radiation, cancer could take 20 or 30 years or longer to develop. Therefore us older ones have less chance of getting cancer. ” The SVCF also advocates for improved safety for workers, and for internationalizing the effort to stabilize the plant’s three reactors, and the 7 spent fuel pools at risk for meltdown with global consequences.
