Biotechnology draws from many disciplines including genetics, biochemistry, and molecular biology. Recent advances in biotechnology have resulted in the development of products that are having a positive impact on our health, food, and environment.
BCC’s program, which integrates academic and occupational instruction, prepares you for entry-level employment as a bioscience technician in this exciting field.
When you finish the two-year program in biotechnology, you will earn either an Associate in Science degree or a Certificate of Completion. The Associate in Science degree requires the completion of 61 units, the Certificate of Completion, 47 units. A Certificate of Proficiency is offered as a 15.5 unit program.
Graduates of our Biotechnology program have found positions at local biotechnology firms (including Bayer and Novartis), the California Department of Health and Human Services, and research laboratories at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, the Universities of California Berkeley and San Francisco.
The Biotechnology Department’s Bridge to Stem Cell Program at Berkeley City College is supported by a $2.4 million grant from the California Institute for Regenerative Medicine (CIRM), a newly formed stage agency which administers California voter-approved funds for stem cell research within the state.
