Join us for a performance-lecture about the life and legacy of seminal gay Jewish artist Remy Charlip by performer Seth Eisen and dancer James Graham. This free event, co-hosted by Sha’ar Zahav and co-sponsored Keshet, will include food and refreshments.

A precocious Jewish boy raised in Brooklyn, Charlip was an integral part of the New York avant-garde of the 1950s and 60s, a founding member of The Merce Cunningham Dance Company; stage directing, designing costumes and choreographing for The Living Theater and The Judson Church Dance Theater, winning him two Village Voice Obie awards. Charlip also wrote and illustrated 30+ picture books, receiving three New York Times Best Illustrated Book citations and deemed a National Treasure by the Library of Congress.

Be the first to discover this seminal, gay ancestor in a not-to-be-missed celebration about how gay Jewish lineage is passed on from generation to generation.

Eisen’s interdisciplinary theatre works unearth and elevate the stories of LGBTQ ancestors. Eisen will be joined on stage by James Graham, Izzie award-winning dancer and teacher of Gaga (an Israeli dance form developed by Batsheva Dance Company), and actor, Harry Breaux. This dynamic event is part of Eisen’s upcoming premiere of The Charlip Project, reviving the iconoclastic life and work of Remy Charlip, opening hearts and minds to this queer Jewish original.

The Charlip Project is made possible with generous support from: The Kenneth Rainin Foundation, The Center for Cultural Innovation’s Investing in Artists Grant, The Zellerbach Family Foundation, The Arch and Bruce Brown Foundation, The Jim Henson Foundation, CA$H, and formative work for The Charlip Project created during an Artist Residency at Harrison House Music, Arts & Ecology, Joshua Tree, CA, 2016 and generous individuals.
